Offered by Nicole Corbo of Roots & Sky Nature-Based Learning
Stories contain a particular type of magic. The way they inspire, delight, call us in and carry us away - and this is true for people of all ages, both the teller and their audience. When learning in, about, and with nature, storytelling can be a powerful tool for sparking conversations and creating a collaborative learning space. From inviting your students to share their imaginations and experiences; to reading a book in a forest grove; whether sitting by a fire, weaving together the story of the day’s learning; or sharing a favorite tale of your own creation, the opportunities are countless. We’ll begin this workshop with an exploration of the many ways to integrate storytelling. Then we’ll talk about how to encourage students of any age to confidently and joyfully create and share their stories. Plus, you’ll get to work on developing self-confidence as a storyteller yourself. Learn some simple skills, such as voice and body mechanics or intentional inquiry, to captivate and engage. Whether you are teaching early learners or a 12th grade Language Arts class, the magical craft of storytelling will enhance and strengthen your learning community.
About Nicole
Nicole Corbo has spent the last three decades educating learners of all ages in nature. She founded Roots & Sky Nature-Based Learning because she believes it is essential for all children, preschool through high school (and the grown-ups who guide them), to access and experience meaningful time learning in, about, and with nature. Through Roots & Sky, she offers programs, professional development, and consulting services. Once a year, Nicole co-leads experiential education river trips for middle school students, and she is also Director of the Washington Nature Preschool Association (WaNPA). Nicole is a Certified Trainer of The Cedarsong Way and, part of the time, she teaches at Nature Nuts Forest Kindergarten, where she is joyfully referred to as Teacher Frog. Nicole is an avid storyteller; she has taught courses on storytelling and she integrates stories and storytelling into all the education she facilitates. You can even watch her tell a story on GCY Rivertales 2021!
