This online workshop, offered by Shawn Rundell, is the second in a series that explores some of the many ways we can ensure joyful outdoor learning is for everyone. This is asynchronous learning, so you get to learn at your own pace and come back to the video and resources as often as you like.

Each Professional Development Learning Series (PDLS) has three distinct workshops that intersect at different points, so they can weave together themes and ideas, building upon them for scaffolded learning or be enjoyed a la cart to best meet your professional development needs.

In order for outdoor learning to be high-quality, it must include people of all abilities, so in this workshop, you will explore strategies and approaches for welcoming all families; you will reflect on your intersectionality and positionality, especially related to ableism. You will also gain an understanding of laws and policies impacting accessibility.

Shawn Rundell is a parent, pediatric physical therapist and instructor in the University of Washington Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Her passions include the intersection between child development, disability, and nature with a specific focus on ensuring that outdoor spaces and nature-based programs are welcoming and inclusive.

In nature, we find everything we need.

In service to our mission and goals, we acknowledge that nature-based learning has been practiced by Indigenous Peoples all over the Earth since time immemorial. Roots & Sky Nature-Based Learning programs take place on the unceded ancestral land of numerous Coast Salish tribes, including dxʷdəwʔabš, s·dukʷalbixʷ, spuyaləpabš, and the Muckleshoot Tribe. With gratitude, we honor the land itself and these tribes that are still here, thriving and vibrant, continuing to protect the land.

We also acknowledge that access to natural spaces and the outdoors has been historically exclusive in colonized places and continues to be less safe and welcoming for Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other People of Color. Roots & Sky Nature-Based Learning is committed to working toward environmental justice, through active anti-racism and anti-bias, in order to ensure equity, access, and joy for all in nature.
